Greg Murphy gives glowing endorsement of S5000

New Zealand motorsports legend Greg Murphy has given a glowing endorsement of the all-new S5000 open wheel racing car after getting his first laps at the Newcastle street circuit today.

Murphy, the 1994 New Zealand Grand Prix winner and four-time Bathurst 1000 winner, completed three laps of the Newcastle track, showing the big crowd the amazing sound and speed that the 560 horsepower car has.

After being unveiled at Sydney Motorsport Park on Monday to media and competitiors, the Newcastle laps marked the first public appearance for the vehicle.

Former Australian Gold Star champion John Bowe will drive the car in more demonstration laps at Newcastle tomorrow.

The S5000 chassis features the latest FIA-specification carbon-fibre monocoque with strength, safety and cost-effectiveness the main priorities.

The S5000 chassis features the halo protective device, making it the first Australian racing class that will feature the FIA-mandated safety feature.

New Zealand motorsport legend

“It’s always great getting behind the wheel of something new and especially as something as exciting as the S5000,” said

“I’m very honoured and privilege to get the chance to do it,  but I only did a couple of laps, and it wasn’t enough – I want more now!

“If you can master one of these, and if the field of drivers is of a high calibre – young and fast – then this will be a stepping stone to Europe and America.

“This car needs young drivers with no fear who are willing to push the envelope of these cars.

“I hope that it can bring back a new interest in this time of formula in Australasia. There are a few kiwis who are keen to get behind the wheel of these cars. I really hope it’s a massive success. It deserves to be because it is fast, loud, cost effective and very reliable.”
