Herne sets record lap to grab Surfers Pole

NATHAN HERNE has recorded the quickest ever lap of the shortened Gold Coast Street Circuit to grab pole position for the S5000 Tasman Series on the streets of Surfers Paradise.

His 1m09.6681s best did enough to secure him pole position in a constantly evolving session – that saw Herne’s top spot secured when a red flag flew in the second half.

It’s the first lap in the 69-second barrier since the circuit was shortened in 2010.

Cooper Webster was second for Versa Motorsport, however will face a race against time to make the opening race on Saturday afternoon after a hefty crash late in the session at Turn 3.

The session resumed with three minutes remaining with all drivers looking to maximize their final few laps to try and improve on their qualifying results.

Webster clipped the inside tyres on the exit of the chicane, spearing across to the outside of the circuit with several damaged corners.

Earlier, Jude Bargwanna crashed at Turn 13 to bring out the first red flag with damage to the right front corner to his entry.

Herne ended up with pole by 0.11 seconds, with Webster second and Joey Mawson third.

Jordan Boys was fourth – just 0.37s from pole – with Ben Bargwanna fifth.

Jude Bargwanna, Noah Sands, Mark Rosser and Elly Morrow completed the runners.
