Formula Ford graduate joins S5000 ranks

Versa Motorsport has announced that young gun Winston Smith will join the team from Phillip Island onwards as part of the exciting S5000 Series.

The team announced on their socials on Wednesday that Smith will debut for the team next weekend at the world-famous circuit during the second round of the 2023 Shannons SpeedSeries.

Smith will line-up alongside teammate Cooper Webster, who is currently sitting in second place in the overall standings after a clean sweep of podiums in the opening round.

He joins the team with plenty of open-wheel experience at his young age, as he has previously spent time in the Australian Formula Ford Championship – where he finished in fifth place with one win and five podiums.

This isn’t the first time he has stepped foot in an S5000 car either, as he was given plenty of track time at the Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania earlier this year as part of the Garry Rogers Motorsport (GRM) Combine.

He will also be debuting at a circuit where he narrowly missed out on pole position at in last year’s Formula Ford event, meaning the team are expecting him to get up to speed quickly.

But this time, Smith will join the likes of Joey Mawson, Aaron Cameron, James Golding and Cooper Webster in what is expected to be a competitive line-up at the Island next week.

Tickets for the second round of the SpeedSeries season are still available via motorsporttickets.com.au.

For those who are unable to make the trip to Phillip Island, Stan Sport will provide live and uninterrupted coverage from most of Saturday and Sunday’s action, while 9Gem will also broadcast three hours of Saturday afternoon’s racing.

The second round of the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship kicks off at the Shannons SpeedSeries Phillip Island event on 12-14 May.
