Ricky Capo set to get a taste of S5000 at Phillip Island
Young racer Ricky Capo will join a host of drivers at Phillip Island for the one-day driver evaluation test tomorrow.
Capo will join the likes of TCR star John Martin, Formula 4 champion Luis Leeds and former Superbike rider Beau Beaton at the Island test, getting laps in the five brand-new cars that Garry Rogers Motorsport is preparing.
The test has been instigated to give S5000 hopefuls the opportunity to sample the cars ahead of the historic opening event of the new wings and slicks category at Sandown on September 20-22.
Former Formula 1 star Rubens Barrichello and third-generation Australian driver Matthew Brabham are confirmed starters for the Sandown event.
Capo is no stranger to open wheel motorsport, having competed in the Australian Formula 3 and finishing second in the 2015 crown after a controversial season conclusion.
He has also raced, and won, in European LMP3, securing a class win at the 4 hours of Monza in 2017.

“It will be good to compare what the S5000 is like to the other cars that I have driven in the past,” said Ricky Capo.
“Phillip Island is the ideal place for a test like this and will suit the cars. It’s a fast and flowing circuit, so it will give a really good indication on what power and downforce the car actual has.
“At the moment, Sandown isn’t my main concern. I haven’t done a lot of racing this year, so I’ll just see how I go at Phillip Island before worrying about what comes next.
“I really feel that the S5000 category is going to work for Australian motorsport. Everyone is really intrigued. It has the right teams and people behind it, especially with GRM, and I’m looking forward to seeing how many cars and drivers there can be on track. I think it has a lot of potential.
“I’d like to thank GRM for the opportunity to test one of their new cars and I can’t wait to see what it’s all about.”
