Ricky Capo confirmed for S5000 race debut at Sandown

Rising Australian racer Ricky Capo will be part of history at Sandown Raceway, competing in the inaugural S5000 race event next weekend.

The 23 year old’s entry will be privately run, prepared by a crew of experienced family and friends. His car will feature support from Modena Engineering, Valvoline and Race Fuels.

Capo has had two stints in the S5000, driving in the rain-affected day at Phillip Island, before getting more laps at Sydney Motorsport Park last week.

Capo is no stranger to open wheel motorsport, having competed in the Australian Formula 3, as well as winning in European LMP3, securing a class win at the 4 hours of Monza in 2017.

Capo is the 11th driver confirmed for the Sandown race meeting which includes a start-studded line-up of local and international talent. Rubens Barrichello, Matthew Brabham, Will Brown, John Martin and Tim Macrow are some of the drivers confirmed for the history-making meeting.

Practice kicks off on Friday, September 20, followed by qualifying and racing on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets can be pre-purchased or bought at the gate, and for those unable to make it to Sandown for the historic first event, the races will be broadcast live, free and in HD on SBS, or via the Shannons Nationals live stream.

“I got to do a few more laps at Sydney Motorsport Park and really started to become more comfortable and confident in the car,” said Ricky Capo.

“I was happy with the pace, and got to experiment with a few set-up changes and driving styles.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to pick up where we left off at Phillip Island on Wednesday, and then head into Sandown and get serious.

“I really like the cars. They are something similar to what I’ve driven before. They are really fun. It has so much power and lots of downforce. Now, we’ll all be fine tuning the set-up to make the car go better and I can only imagine that they will only go faster and faster.

“It’s also been good to develop a relationship with GRM. They have been really good to me over the journey so far and I’m looking forward to building on that in the coming months.”
