“It’s pretty fun” – Alex Premat reacts to first S5000 laps

Alex Premat has described his first laps of an S5000 car as “pretty fun” as he prepares for the historic opening round of the 2020 VHT Australian S5000 Championship at Albert Park next weekend.

The Frenchman and reigning Bathurst 1000 champion flew into Australia this morning and headed straight to Winton Motor Raceway where the Garry Rogers Motorsport team has three cars on track for a short two hour session this afternoon.

Premet was driving the Paytner Dixon backed S5000 that Matthew Brabham drove at Sandown, while new team signing Luis Leeds is shaking down the two new chassis that will compete at Albert Park, supporting the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix.

Premat is no stranger to open wheel competition, having bumped wheels with the likes of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton during his days in GP2 (now known as Formula 2).

“It’s fantastic. The car is awesome,” he said from Winton.

“A lot of sliding, not a lot of downforce for an open wheeler and the power of the car is pretty fun.

“I’m really looking forward to the Melbourne Grand Prix next weekend.”
