Young Kiwi ace secures first S5000 victory at Sandown
Kaleb Ngatoa has taken his maiden victory in the VHT S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship in a wet second race at Sandown today.
The young Kiwi star led from the get go, holding off a late fight from Team BRM team-mate Joey Mawson to become the sixth different winner from the eight races held so far this year.
Mawson claimed second ahead of Thomas Randle, who survived a first lap spin to storm through the pack and pip Nathan Herne on the finish line on the final lap.
The race was held in very wet conditions and both Tim Macrow and Randle caught out in some bump and grind at Turns 2 and 3.
James Golding suffered from damage in the first lap crunch, damaging the front right steering and eventually clouting the wall on the back straight and ending his race.
The incident brought out the race’s one and only safety car, and when competition resumed, it was Ngatoa who led from the front and was never touched.
The final race of the Sandown weekend kicks off at 2:45pm AEDT.
