Young guns get first taste of S5000 at Sydney

Supercheap Auto TCR Australia rookie Lachlan Mineeff and Super2 race winner Jordan Boys have expressed their admiration for the drivers in the VHT S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship, after testing one of the V8-powered open wheelers under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park this evening.

The two drivers turned laps in the 88 Racing machine, which has been driven by Cooper Webster throughout the season.

Both Mineeff and Boys have prior open-wheel experience, having each won rounds of the Australian Formula Ford Championship. But they said the S5000 car was something else.

“The power and the handling, with the slick tyres and 560 horsepower, are just incredible – I’m lost for words,” Mineeff said.

“The TCR car is quite quick and Formula Fords handle well, but this is everything in one.

“It’s given me a huge amount of respect for the guys who race these and run at the front.”

“It was pretty nuts driving under lights here,” Boys added.

“They’re cool cars, in as much as you can tip them in so much faster than a Supercar. I would love to go racing one, for sure.

“This track lends itself to these sorts of cars, so fingers crossed the racing this weekend is good.

“I really think in the next couple of years, you’ll see guys coming and racing these on their way to Supercars, maybe as an alternate route to Super2. It’s exciting to see this sort of category, it’s something we’ve been missing for a while

Mineeff also said his taste of the S5000 has given him a desire to race one in the future.

“I’m extremely thankful to Albert and the team at 88 Racing, along with ACM Finance, for the opportunity to drive the car this evening,” he said.

“It would be an incredible opportunity to race one at some stage in the future.”
