S5000 to return to Formula 1 Heineken Grand Prix in Melbourne

THE S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship will return to complete the job they started in 2020 when they join the 2022 Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix program this April 7-10.

S5000 made their debut at the Australian Grand Prix in 2020, completing qualifying prior to the event ultimately being cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The category was then confirmed on the program for the 2021 event, which also did not proceed.

A return to Albert Park marks an important moment for the category as it takes the opportunity to showcase the best of Australian, New Zealand and international open-wheel talent alongside the stars of Formula One.

Valvoline Team GRM and driver James Golding represented S5000 at today’s launch held in the Albert Park circuit pit lane.

S5000 joins a bumper support race program at the event this year, with 21 hours and 42 sessions of on-track action confirmed today.

The Supercars’ Beaurepaires Melbourne 400 and Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia will also feature, while the 2022 on-track line-up will also showcase exotic and classic cars as part of the Shannons Historic Demonstration and the much-loved Targa Florio Australian Tribute Rally.

The Albert Park Grand Prix circuit will continue to be a level playing field for teams and drivers thanks to an extensive redevelopment and resurfacing of the circuit layout in a bid to improve racing.

The S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship will hit the track on Thursday, April 7 at Albert Park with three races set for the weekend.
