Golding, Mawson on top in S5000 Practice 1

JAMES GOLDING and Joey Mawson have continued their rivalry in the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship, locking out the top two spots in the first practice session at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Golding’s 1m25.2651s best edged out Mawson by 0.29 seconds to top the 25-minute session.

The returning Nathan Herne was third, a further 0.3 seconds behind as he continues his quest for a maiden S5000 race victory.

Tasman Series winner Aaron Cameron was fourth with Tim Macrow – who jetted directly to Sydney from racing in the annual Spa Classic historic event last weekend – fifth, less than one second off the pace.

Cooper Webster and Shae Davies were sixth and seventh, respectively, while Blake Purdie only completed one lap at the end of the session after his team discovered a brake issue on the car just prior to the morning sessions.

The S5000 field returns for a second practice session at 1:30pm this afternoon, ahead of qualifying and the first race tomorrow afternoon.

The opening race will be the first ever Motorsport Australia Gold Star race to ever be held under lights and headlines 9Gem’s two hour live broadcast starting from 5:30pm AEST.
