Webster flyer sets top time in Friday practice

COOPER WEBSTER has set a stunning lap to top the charts in an abbreviated second practice session as the S5000 Tasman Series fired up on the streets of Surfers Paradise on Friday afternoon.

The Versa Motorsport driver banked a 1:10.0973 to come agonisingly close to becoming the first driver to crack the 69-second barrier on the current version of the Gold Coast street circuit.

He topped Jordan Boys by six-tenths of a second, with Nathan Herne next.

The Bargwanna boys – Jude leading Ben – were next, split by 0.01 seconds, while Joey Mawson had a tough session.

A damaged pressure valve on his right-front wheel left his tyre flat, forcing him to the lane.

With the category rules stipulating that a replacement could only come from his allocated set of new Hoosiers for qualifying, the team elected to park the Gold Star champion for the remainder of the session.

Noah Sands was next, despite a crash at Turn two that saw his Valvoline GRM car in the tyre bundle and bringing out the red flag.

Mark Rosser and Elly Morrow completed the runners as the field continued to come to grips with the demanding circuit.

Tomorrow will see the field head out for Qualifying and the first race, with both sessions broadcast live on Fox Sports 506 and Kayo Sports.
