Mawson charges to Race 2 win, Merhi charges
JOEY MAWSON has continued his unbeaten start to the 2023 Gold Star season by taking another strong victory in race two of the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship at Symmons Plains.
Mawson led from pole as Cameron’s Valvoline GRM car nearly stalled at the line, handing an early lead to Mawson and dropping him back to ninth place.
Golding passed Webster – who had a moment at turn two – early in the race however was unable to close in on the race leader.
An early Safety Car was called when Zane Goddard’s Team BRM car stopped at turn six with gear selection issues, though the former Supercars full-timer was able to re-boot his car and return to pit lane.
The restart saw Mawson cantering away in front, while all eyes were on Roberto Merhi who was continuing his scythe through the field.
Starting ninth, the Spaniard made light work of his closest rivals and the Safety Car allowed him to close on to the back of the leaders for the dash to the line.
A big hustle on the final lap saw Webster forced to defend heavily into turn six, though Merhi was unable to scrape through.
With Mawson, Golding, Webster and Merhi the top four, Jordan Boys was a solid fifth following a race-long midfield scrap with teammate Cameron, Blake Purdie, Merhi and Nic Carroll that lasted throughout most of the race.
The final race will commence at 2:20pm AEDT and will be shown live on Stan Sport.
