Cameron sets Blistering Morning Pace, Purdie on top in the Afternoon

Aaron Cameron and Blake Purdie were the ones to beat in today’s two practice sessions for the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship at Sydney Motorsport Park.

This morning’s first session was an important one for all teams and drivers as they came to grips with the brand-new Hoosier tyres debuting this weekend.

Aided by low UV and slightly overcast conditions, Team Valvoline GRM’s Cameron took full advantage of the softer tyre, setting the fastest ever S5000 lap recorded at Sydney Motorsport Park with a 1m 23.5341s, the only driver to break into the 1m 23s range in the first session.

S5000 debutant Aaron Love was an impressive second for Team BRM/88 Racing deputising for Joey Mawson, with Cameron’s Team Valvoline GRM teammate Jordan Boys rounding out the top three.

Cameron once again went to the top of the time sheets at the beginning of this afternoon’s second practice session, his 1m 24.9236s topping  Purdie in his Nippy’s Versa Motorsport entry by two hundredths of a second at the halfway point of the session.

Purdie then went one better than Cameron, setting a 1m 24.3658s to best Cameron’s improved time of 1m 24.8807s by over half a second at the chequered flag.

Love continued his impressive first day in S5000 competition, ending the second session in third just over six tenths down on the pace of Purdie.

Fellow S5000 debutant Kody Garland ended the second session in fourth for Wholesale Diesel, with Boys rounding out the top five.

The S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship returns to the track for qualifying at 3:10pm this afternoon.
