Cameron Claims Sydney Sweep with Dominant Display
Team Valvoline GRM’s Aaron Cameron won the third and final race of the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship at Sydney Motorsport Park, launching himself right into championship contention.
Cameron made a perfect start from pole position and was never headed in another dominant display, breaking the lap record on the final lap with a 1m 25.4355s to put an exclamation point on a crushing weekend performance.
Ben Bargwanna made a good start from fourth on the grid to jump Blake Purdie into third, before the Nippy’s Versa Motorsport entry sailed around the outside of turn two to regain third.
There was drama further back in the field as Aaron Love, who was recovering from a poor start, made contact with his Team BRM teammate Mark Rosser, sending Rosser to the rear of the field and damaging Love’s front wing.
What had been a quiet race came to life on the final lap, as Purdie closed onto the rear of Jordan Boys’ Team Valvoline GRM entry in second position.
Boys ran slightly wide at turn two, giving Purdie a chance to look to the inside at corner exit, however Boys was just able to hang on.
Purdie made the most of his Push to Pass on the exit of turn five, diving down the inside of Boys at turn six to muscle his way through into second position.
Cameron had almost seven seconds on Purdie at the chequered flag, with Boys taking the final step of the podium ahead of Bargwanna and the damaged Love.
Kody Garland took sixth ahead of Nic Carroll, Sebastien Amadio, and Mark Rosser rounded out the nine car field.
The next round of the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship will take place The Bend Motorsport Park on August 18-20, supporting the Supercars Championship at the OTR SuperSprint.
