Cameron Tops S5000 Practice at The Bend

Team Valvoline GRM driver Aaron Cameron has thrown down the gauntlet to the competition in the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship, topping practice at The Bend Motorsport Park.

The second session provided the pick of the on-track running for the day, with a time of 1:42.8906sec placing Cameron 0.1924sec ahead of the field.

Cooper Webster, who needs a strong result this weekend to close the gap to Cameron in the title chase, was the only driver in the field to head to the pits for attention during the 20min session, with the Versa Motorsport steerer ultimately placing second after being on top for much of the run.

Jordan Boys was third in the sister car to Cameron, well clear of Blake Purdie in the Nippy’s Racing entry.

Aaron Love continued his acclimation to the category with the fifth best time in his Team BRM machine, ahead of Ben Bargwanna (Hangcha Racing), Nic Carroll (Crown Windows), Kody Garland (Wholesale Diesel) and local driver Mark Rosser (The Fuzzies Game).

Interestingly, the new Hoosier tyre for the class came on strong late in the session, with Boys, Bargwanna, Garland and Rosser all setting their lap times on their respective final circuits.

Earlier in practice one, a wet track threw a spanner in the works for the drivers who took to the track.

After 20 minutes, Love topped the timesheets with a best time of 1:56.8467sec, leading home Carroll by 0.1872sec.

Third for the session was Cameron, from Bargwanna, Boys, Garland and Rosser.

The S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship returns to the track for qualifying at 2:50pm ACST.
