Amadio impresses on first S5000 competitive outing
Adelaide teenager Sebastien Amadio has impressed in his first competitive hit out aboard a Rogers AFO1/V8 S5000 racer today at The Bend Classic.
Driving the same Team BRM entry Thomas Randle raced to second in this year’s Australian Drivers’ Championship, the 17-year-old Superkart gradate is competing against Formula One and exotic open-wheel machinery at the annual The Bend Classic event in South Australia.
A Super Sprint event, racing against the clock rather than against each other, the event is being held on the 3.4km West circuit.
A day of rain saw Amadio complete an early practice session before the field – a majority of them highly-strung Grand Prix machinery without wet tyres on hand – sat in pit lane waiting for a weather window.
That came late in the day in the form of a 30-minute session where Amadio’s 1m15.505s best saw him finish the day third fastest – behind only Yasser Shahin’s Formula Renault 3.5V8 and Sam Shahin’s V10 Benneton F1 car.
He completed a faultless 20-straight laps as he builds experience and seat time.
Amadio ultimately edged out Craig Lowndes, driving a Cosworth-powered 1989 Dallara F1 car, by two tenths of a second in the day’s final order.
Amadio will be back on track tomorrow for a further two timed sessions before the 10 quickest cars of the event make it through to the shootout later in the afternoon.
