HERNE: ‘What an event it’s going to be’
S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship rookie star Nathan Herne says he is looking forward to a ‘massive festival for motorsport junkies’ this December.
Australia’s premier open wheel category was confirmed as one of the 10 categories included in the massive six-day event, with the Bathurst 1000 weekend to double as the final round of the two-event Tasman Series later this year.
Herne was impressive in his first S5000 season this year, most of it contested while swapping between his Valvoline-backed Rogers AF01/V8 chassis in the open wheel category and a Dodge Challenger in the Trans Am Series.
“It’s going to be a massive festival for motorsport junkies to come in and get their adrenaline fix that we’ve been missing out on for the whole year,” said Herne.
“Every form of motorsport is catered for there – two-litre TCRs, Trans Am’s the new kid on the block with the next generation of muscle cars and S5000 debuting at Australia’s toughest circuit, which is going to be something to watch.
“Plus, the Bathurst 1000. What an event it’s going to be.”
Herne said S5000 on the Mountain was likely to be a highlight of the weekend.
“And S5000 is definitely going to be a drawcard. Big banger, V8-powered open-wheelers racing around Bathurst is a drawcard in itself and I think a lot of people will be coming to just watch S5000,” he said.
“I predict there will be some very fast lap times and pretty good racing around the Mountain. Across the top there might be some aero wash following each other, but there’s two long straights to slipstream behind.
“It will be a pretty cool track and car combo, that’s for sure.”
The combined event, culminating in the Bathurst 1000, will be held between Tuesday, November 30 and Sunday, December 5.
