BRM: Winning Tasman Series would be a ‘massive’ achievement
ADDING the S5000 Tasman Series to their trophy cabinet would be an ‘enormous achievement’ for Adelaide-based Team BRM, according to the man at the helm for much of their recent success.
The reigning S5000 Australian Drivers’ Champions are already one of the most successful open-wheel teams in Australian Motorsport, this year adding their seventh Gold Star title to their records thanks to Joey Mawson’s impressive title.
That seventh crown tied BRM with legendary outfit Birrana Racing at the top of the all-time leaderboard for Australia’s premier open wheel award.
BRM has a further two titles to their credit in Australian Formula 3, and two more in Australian F4 competition.
However, team boss Mark Rundle believes adding a Tasman Cup to the trophy cabinet would represent one of their most impressive achievements.
“Purely on the history that the Tasman Series has, and the names to have lifted the Tasman Cup, for sure it would be huge for our little team from Adelaide,” Rundle said.
“Winning the inaugural S5000 championship was a huge thing for the team and to even have the chance to challenge for a Tasman Series is fantastic.
“It’s early days and we’re sure that it is going to grow into something very cool, especially given both Motorsport Australia and Motorsport New Zealand are on board, but in the short term we would love to win the first Tasman Series in a long time this November and December.”
BRMs squad will see Joey Mawson return in a bid to claim two open wheel titles in the same year, with his teammates yet to be finalised.
“We’re excited to have Joey back,” Rundle said.
“He’s a huge talent as we saw earlier this year and his performances throughout the championship were really impressive, especially given he came into it without any testing, or any plans to do more than the opening round, when he began.
“If anything the Tasman Series field is stronger than the Australian Drivers’ Championship was earlier this year but we know both the team and Joey are more than up to the challenge.”
S5000 Tasman Series action commences at Sydney Motorsport Park on Thursday, 18 November with a twilight test session, prior to practice, qualifying and three races across the November 19-21 weekend.
