Merhi tops, stops first Bathurst S5000 practice
SPANIARD Roberto Merhi has simultaneously topped and ended the first practice session for the Shannons S5000 Tasman Series at Mount Panorama.
Having just banked a 2m04.0345s flyer to go fastest, the Form 700 / Alabar driver made contact with the fence at McPhillamy Park, damaging the right hand side of his Team BRM entry.
RESULTS: S5000 Tasman Series Practice 1
The subsequent red flag – which came with six minutes remaining in the 30-minute session – would ultimately see it called short.
As a result, Merhi ended quickest with Team Valvoline GRM’s James Golding 0.2 seconds behind in second.
Team BRM expects to repair the car, with the second 30-minute practice session due to start at 4:20pm AEDT today.
With Merhi and Golding first and second, Gold Star champion Joey Mawson was third and Aaron Cameron fourth, both within 0.5 seconds of Merhi’s outright pace.
Round 1 winner Aaron Cameron, Blake Purdie, Tim Macrow, Nathan Herne and Jordan Boys were next, the top eight covered by 0.8 of a second.
The returning John Martin and Luis Leeds completed the 10 runners.
