Herne finally scores breakthrough S5000 victory
AFTER two years of trying, Nathan Herne has finally broken through for his maiden S5000 race victory, leading home Joey Mawson in a commanding performance in the Tasman Series opener.
Starting from pole, Herne made a perfect start and led the field into turn one, with Mawson settling into second and Jordan Boys third.
Missing was Cooper Webster, his Versa Motorsport team unable to repair his car in time for the race following his qualifying accident.
The race settled down into a competitive flow with Herne and Mawson trading fastest lap times as the race progressed.
The double Gold Star champion pushed hard but could only close to within 1.5 seconds of the eventual winner at the line.
Mawson set the fastest lap on the final lap at a 1m10.1042s, narrowly missing the outright lap record at the Surfers streets.
Jordan Boys had a solid run to third, having to keep Ben Bargwanna behind him for the duration.
Noah Sands finished fifth, Jude Bargwanna sixth while Mark Rosser edged out Elly Morrow in their private little battle for seventh and eighth.
Versa Motorsport are confident Cooper Webster will be able to start tomorrow’s second race from second on the grid.
