Young star Will Brown joins S5000 field at Sandown

Young Australian racing star Will Brown will join Rubens Barrichello on the Sandown grid for the inaugural S5000 race event on September 20-22.

Regarded as one of Australia’s brightest and most talented young race car stars, Brown will suit up for Eggleston Motorsport in the all-new wings and slicks racing formula.

Eggleston Motorsport will take charge of at least one of the new S5000 cars, adding to its impressive fleet of Supercars and GT race car competition.

Brown’s drive of the brand-new S5000 will be a return to his roots, having learnt his craft in junior open wheel racing.

The 21-year-old Toowoomban was a star in Formula Ford, finishing second in the 2016 Australian championship, despite missing the opening round of the series.

In the same year, he won the Australian Formula 4 Championship and the Toyota 86 Series, cementing his place as a future star of the sport.

Brown has enjoyed a busy 2019 season, headlined by his dominating start to the inaugural carsales TCR Australia Series. Driving a Hyundai i30 N, Brown currently leads the series and has won half of the races contested this year.

He has also dovetailed his Hyundai TCR campaign with his entry in the Super2 Series, driving for Eggleston Motorsport. Brown took a race win at Barbagallo Raceway earlier this year and sits ninth in the title.

Adding to his busy 2019 commitments, Brown will co-drive with Anton De Pasquale in the Supercars endurance races later this year.

The maiden S5000 race meeting at Sandown is shaping up as an historic weekend. Not only will Australia see the return of a homegrown open wheel class, the TCR Australia Series will make its first visit to the suburban Melbourne venue, as well as the Australian GT Championship, the popular Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, Production Cars and the Super3 finale.

“It’s such a thrill to be confirmed to start in the first-ever S5000 race at Sandown,” said Will Brown.

“I’ve been watching these cars doing demonstrations at the TCR events this year and I’ve been hanging off the fence, keen to have a drive.

“They sound awesome, they look great and they are so fast. These cars are going to be amazing at Sandown and we are going to be doing our best to be at the front of the field and enjoy the experience.

“And I couldn’t think of doing it with any other team than Eggleston Motorsport. They have looked after me really well in the Super2 Series, so the good thing is I don’t need to learn the people, all I need to do is learn the car.”

Team owner, Eggleston Motorsport

“We are really excited to be involved in the inaugural round of the S5000 series at Sandown and even better that we get to make our debut with Will who is a big part of our EMS family,” said Rachael Eggleston.

“Will has a lot of experience in open wheelers and has proven he can pretty much drive any type of car so we are hopeful of a strong result.

“It looks like there is going to be some seriously good steerers at the opening round so we are under no illusions the competition will be fierce but we really look forward to a new challenge.

“We have seen the car in action during the year doing some demonstration laps and the sound is incredible. They truly are a work of art. A field of these cars will certainly turn some heads and, given the cars are so tightly controlled in a technical sense, it will become a lot more about the driver’s ability and their communication with the team to fine tune those small areas that are permitted within the rules.”

Director, Australian Racing Group

“It is outstanding that we welcome Will Brown onto the grid for the inaugural S5000 race at Sandown on September 20-22,” said Matt Braid.

“Will is clearly shaping up as one of the stars of Australian and international motorsport. Whatever he turns his hand to, he is very competitive, as we feel that it won’t be any different in the new S5000 class.

“It is very exciting to see the S5000 field now start to take shape, with a great mix of drivers from around the world, headlined by Rubens Barrichello. We know that Sandown is going to be one of those events that is going to be remembered for a long time.”
