James Golding leads opening Phillip Island practice
James Golding led the opening VHT S5000 Australian Drivers Championship practice session at a sunny Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
Clear blue skies greeted the field on Friday morning as the drivers took to the track for the first time ahead of Round 2 at the Victorian circuit.
RESULTS: Practice 1
Golding clocked up a 1:26.082s lap time to go quickest in the Team Valvoline GRM entry as the field thundered around the historic venue.
He was closely followed by team-mate Nathan Herne in second, only two tenths off the pace, while Thomas Randle was also not far behind.
Series leader, Randle, completed a 1:26.390s effort to go third at the wheel of his Castrol-backed entry, a mere three tenths off Golding’s time.
Joey Mawson and Luis Leeds completed the top five.
The 20-minute hit-out ran incident-free as drivers acclimatised themselves with the 4.45km layout and ran through their individual practice programs.
Practice 2 is scheduled to get underway at 13:30 AEDT.
